Another chess tournament, another strong showing by our Bulldogs on Saturday. We had 11 players across 4 sections representing us in the CCF/YCFC event at nearby Wildwood School. Here’s how it went down.
In the Novice 3-4 section, Kanan K. earned 4/5 points and brought home the 4th place trophy! In his 4th round match, Kanan mounted a huge comeback, recovering from a near checkmate to defeat his opponent. Lesson: Never give in – never, never, never. Way to go, Kanan! Also in the section, Victor T. earned 3/5 points for a 26th place finish. First timers Michael T. and Matt C. earned their stripes by getting their first victories in competition. Great job, team!
In the Novice 5-6 section, we had two Bulldogs bring home some hardware. Liam H. won 4 of 5 matches, only losing to the section champion, and got himself a 4th place trophy! Not to be outdone, Ari F. drew his first two games, then won three in a row for 4/5 points and a 7th place trophy! Awesome, Liam and Ari!
Our Novice K-2 team had strong performances from siblings Timothy and Ruby. Timothy is a Kindergartner and therefore our youngest competitor, but his enthusiasm is contagious. Timothy lost his first two matches but roared back with three victories in a row, finishing in 20th place. Ruby then earned 2.5/5 points and came just a bit behind her brother in 28th place. Well done!
Finally, we have our Advanced team, which takes on the best of the best players. Nolan F. was just promoted to this group, but he showed he belonged by winning 3 matches for 3/5 points and an 11th place finish. Dimitri D. also earned 3/5 points and came in 16th place based on tiebreaks. Angelo Landiza competed hard and contributed a victory to a 5th place finish for the Advanced team. Nice work, team!
Only one more YCFC/CCF tournament to go, on Saturday May 20 at Alfred Nobel School. Let’s make that our best one yet.
